This policy describes how the OctoDownloader browser extension (“the extension”) handles information. It matches the current product: Instagram saving in the user’s browser, with no cloud backend and no user accounts.
OctoDownloader is not affiliated with Instagram, Meta Platforms, Inc., or any of their products.
What the extension does
OctoDownloader adds on-page controls so you can save Instagram photos, videos, Reels, Stories, and (when you choose) a full profile archive that you can already open in your own browser session. Files are written to a folder you pick on your computer.
Data we do not collect
The extension does not:
- Operate a Netcode server that receives your media, cookies, passwords, or browsing history
- Create an OctoDownloader account or require you to sign in to us
- Sell, rent, or share user data with third parties
- Use advertising, analytics, crash-reporting, or telemetry SDKs
- Load or run remote extension code from the network
We do not receive a copy of files you save.
Website content handled on your device
When you click a save control, the extension reads the Instagram page you already have open and may fetch photo or video bytes from Instagram CDNs so it can write those files to your folder. That is website content processed locally. It is not sent to Netcode.
Information stored only on your device
These items stay in your browser profile (Chrome storage and IndexedDB). They are not uploaded to Netcode.
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Whether a save folder is set, and that folder’s name | Shown in the popup and options page |
| A File System Access handle for the folder you chose | So later saves do not ask you to pick a folder every time |
| Settings such as skip existing files | Options you choose |
| Last / in-progress job status | Progress in the popup after a download |
Uninstalling the extension removes this stored state. Clearing the save folder from Options drops the folder handle. Saved media files on disk are yours; uninstall does not delete them.
Network use (your browser, not our servers)
When you click a save control, the extension may:
- Read the Instagram page you already have open (including data Instagram already loaded for that tab)
-
Request media from Instagram and related CDNs (
instagram.com,cdninstagram.com,fbcdn.net) from your browser, using the session you already have in that browser when Instagram requires it
Those requests go to Instagram / Meta infrastructure, not to Netcode. Instagram’s own terms and privacy policy apply to that traffic.
If no save folder is set, the extension asks you to choose one. It does not write into Chrome’s default Downloads folder.
Permissions (why they exist)
- storage — local settings, folder name, job status
- offscreen — keep long “download all posts” jobs alive
- Host access to Instagram and CDN hosts — find and fetch the media you asked to save
The extension does not need, and does not ask for, your Instagram password. Do not enter Instagram credentials into any OctoDownloader screen; there isn’t one for that.
What we do not do with other people’s content
The extension is meant for personal copies of media you are already allowed to view. It does not bypass private accounts, logins, or paywalls. It does not rehost or redistribute media on a Netcode website.
Children
The extension is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If the product starts collecting data (for example a future account or paid feature), this policy will be updated before that behavior ships, and the Chrome Web Store privacy disclosures will be updated to match.
